The Sunrise

By Grace
Grade 7

It’s in the gleaming sunrise of a new day,
Which most of us never even wake up to see.
It’s in the words of a newfound friend,
With the powers to brighten your day instantly,

It’s in the abundant laughter of your family,
And in every smile that genuinely glows,
It pours out of each friendly wave,
And sprouts with the dew-covered plants that innocently grow.

Happiness is what I speak of,
With the ability to shine through even the thickest of rain clouds,
More brilliantly illuminated than any star,
Providing voices with a merry sound.

I believe that happiness has been in everyone’s life,
But at those times when it seems as if its light has dimmed,
We can wake up and watch the sunrise,
And discover that we have only forgotten.

The Ride

By Rosemary Reynolds
Grade 8

Riding on a horse through a forest thick and green
Leaves are slapping gently on the leg of my jean
I take the long, winding trail leading towards the pond
What better company to do this with, than the one with the strongest bond?
My precious horse is careful, taking me through the widest paths
In order to keep me far away from danger's harming wraths
My horse keeps me company as we venture far from home
Leaving behind the house and barn, going out on our own
I've ridden in small and large arenas, and varying round-pens
But nothing compares to my first ride alone to go and see my friends
We are all going on a ride today in the same forest I now travel
Later in the day, my horse's hooves will be upon this same gravel
As we wind through the trees, and certain calm approaches
The saddle is more comfortable than a dozen cushioned coaches
My breathing eases, my body relaxes, when I see that I am secure
And my horse will keep me safe, that is certainly for sure

The Bodie Story

By Joseph Cook
Grade 9

The hitching posts are empty. I look across the windswept plain, stopping now and then to rest my gaze on a crooked door, an old plow, or a broken window. I take a breath of the dry California air as I walk towards one of the wooden buildings that are dilapidated after so many years of disuse. As I approach it, I can almost picture what it was like here in Bodie so many decades ago. I close my eyes and lean against the crooked frame of the now empty house and imagine.

“Move that trunk,” yells a man. “The next stagecoach is due in fifteen minutes!”

“We’ve got miners coming in by the droves,” a man muttered.

The general store is full of people, some chatting, others buying merchandise. On a side street, two old men sit in rocking chairs, on a porch, playing checkers. The rattle of wagons can be heard, as miners cart in ore and gold. The city shimmers in the late afternoon heat. Bodie is a prosperous town, home to over 10,000 people. Most people came with hope of striking gold in the mines. Some came to run businesses. Gunshots ring out, as two men fight in an alleyway. Fighting in this town is common. A man dies almost every day.

I look up at the faded wooden house as I ponder what caused this town to be deserted. As soon as the gold and iron supply depleted, many left the town. A few stayed, but it would never be the same. The Apostle Paul once said, “The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves with many sorrows.”

Bodie was a gold bearing town and attracted many people. Miners wasted fortunes drinking and gambling. Others wasted their lives in fights over money. A fire struck the last blow to the town, leaving it crippled, and empty.
