I-SWEEEP – International Sustainable World Energy, Engineering and Environment Project Olympiad
By Nicole Sills, Grade 9

I-SWEEEP stands for International Sustainable World Energy, Engineering and Environment Project Olympiad.

In other words, it is an international science fair for high school students.  It is located in Houston, Texas and occurs for about 5-6 days in the months of April or May. At this fair, there are about 70 countries represented.

The main event is the Science Fair competition itself in the three different categories; however, in addition to the exhibition, we all go on field trips to the Johnson Space Center and the Houston Zoo and learn a lot of things.

Last April I went, and had a blast! My mom went with me last year and she said she had just as much fun as I did!

The I-SWEEEP Board of Directors pays for your hotel accommodations and meals. All you have to do is pay for the flight.

On the day before departures, there is a ‘party’ called the I-SWEEEP Social event.  This is where the students and their parents and sponsors gather together to get to know each other and to exchange things from their state or country. Last year, I wasn’t aware of this event and did not have anything to exchange, but even if you don’t have anything to swap, people will gladly give you a pin from their country or anything else they may have with them. This year I am prepared and will be taking historical ornaments from Hernando County, Florida.

Registration for this year is over because the competition starts on May 4, but there is always next year and the years to come.  For all of you high school students interested in Energy, Engineering or Environment, take a look at the website: http://www.isweeep.org/

A Guide To Prom
By Bryan Benz, Grade 9

There are endless “do’s” and “don’ts” when it comes to prom night.

There is one major “don’t” which would be don’t drink and drive on the night of prom because drinking and driving kills a lot of people!

Another “don’t” is don’t go to prom with somebody that you don’t like because you will totally regret going with them later.

If you do have a date to prom, enjoy the dance with your date and don’t leave your date alone at the dance. Have fun with your date.

An important “do” is to get as much rest as you can the day before prom because you will use a lot of energy getting ready for prom and dancing that night at prom.

Don’t do anything that you will regret later because prom is fit to be a memory not something that you would like to forget as an individual.

If you are going to prom make sure you make a budget and stick to that budget until prom night is over.

Make sure you are prepared for any emergency that may happen and bring a cell phone and repair kits.

Another important “do” is to make sure you have plans for before and after prom because you may want to stay the night at a friend’s house.

You also may want to take extra money along with you to prom because you shouldn’t expect your date or parents to pay for every little thing like food, entertainment, and other prom things.

Just in case you lose anything that you do bring with you, write down your phone number and name on a piece of paper and tape it on your items that you bring.

Enjoy your prom!
